Meet the Beekhuis family
In August 2024, Jan-Jaap and Myrthe moved from Amersfoort in the Netherlands to Älmhult with their children. They came for Jan-Jaap's opportunity to work in the beating heart of IKEA, for nature and for a calmer way of living. They stayed because they found a community that welcomed them in.
Within one week we were able to buy a house. In the second week, we were embraced by the Dutch community and made new friends, says Jan-Jaap.
Today, 103 people living in Älmhult are born in the Netherlands, according to figures from 31 December 2024 from Statistics Sweden. But you will also find a wider international community; more than 50 languages are spoken here.
A healthy work–life balance
The Beekhuis family live 10 kilometers north of Älmhult, surrounded by forest and a quiet lake. During the first months, Myrthe studied Swedish full-time, and now she works as a doctor at Achima Care Älmhults vårdcentral.
My wife or I use a mountain bike to get to work in Älmhult. It’s a wonderful trip straight into nature. We do this all year round – even in snow, rain and ice. It’s a great way to start the day, says Jan-Jaap.
The children go to the International School of Älmhult and Swedish daycare and during leisure time, the family enjoys outdoor activites. In winter they skate, ski and mountain bike. In summer they swim, kayak and run. Weekends are a mix of small home projects, friends and sports.
