About general elections to parliament, region and municipality

Every fourth year, we have general elections to parliament, regional and municipality assembly in Sweden. If you are over 18 years old, a Swedish citizen and registered in Älmhult municipality, you can vote in the three elections:

• Älmhult municipality assembly (Kommunfullmäktige)
• Kronoberg regional assembly (Regionfullmäktige)
• Parliament (Riksdag)

More about elections to the municipal assembly

In this election you vote for the political party you think should have majority in the municipality assembly. Älmhult municipality assembly consists of 41 elected representatives who represent the residents of Älmhult municipality. They take decisions in matters related to the municipality.

Who can vote

To be eligible to vote, you must be at least 18 years old on election day. The details listed in the Swedish Population Register 30 days before election day determine whether you are eligible to vote, and which electoral district you belong to.

You are eligible to vote in Parliament (Riksdag) elections if you are:

• a Swedish citizen, and you are or have been listed in the Swedish Population Register.

You are entitled to vote in local council elections for your municipality and region if you are:

• a Swedish citizen, and you are listed in the Swedish Population Register or
• a citizen of an EU country, Iceland or Norway, and you are listed in the Swedish Population Register or
• a citizen of any other country, and you have been listed in the Swedish Population Register for three consecutive years before election day.

Those who are eligible to vote receive a voting card

Those who are eligible to vote are sent a voting card by regular or digital mailbox about three weeks before election day. Your voting card will state the elections in which you are entitled to vote, as well as the name, address and opening hours of your polling station. If your voting card is missing, you can order a new one from your municipality or the Swedish Election Authority.

Different ways to vote

There are different ways to vote; voting in advance, voting on election day, voting by courier, voting with the help of itinerant vote recipients. If you are abroad when there is an election, you can vote in advance from abroad.

Where to vote

In Älmhult municipality, there will be 10 polling stations open between 8.00-20.00, on the election day 13 September.

Which polling station you should vote in is stated on the voting card that you have been sent to your regular or digital mailbox. On election day you can only vote at the polling station listed on your voting card. If you vote in advance you can vote at any polling station in Sweden as long as you bring your voting card.

Vote in advance

You can vote in advance at any advance polling station in Sweden. Your vote will then be sent to your home municipality and be counted alongside in the district you belong to.

In Älmhult municipality you can vote in advance at several places during the period 26th of August to13th of September. You must have a valid ID to be able to vote in advance, so don't forget to bring it.

If you have not received your voting card with Postnord by August 26 or lost your voting card, you can get a new one by contacting Älmhult municipality. Voting envelopes and ballot papers are available in the polling stations.

The counting of votes

When the polling stations have closed on September 13 at 20:00, all votes in the respective polling station are counted. This is called the preliminary vote count, the votes will be counted once more by the county administrative board (Länsstyrelsen).

Any votes not counted on the election day are counted on the Wednesday or Thursday after the election. Then the votes are handed to the county administrative board (Länsstyrelsen), who count the votes once again, including the personal votes.

After the election

The seats (mandates) in the municipal assembly are distributed according to the results of the municipality elections. After the election the municipality assembly selects a municipality board, boards and corporate boards. The municipal assembly elects both full members and alternates.

To be a member of a municipality board or other boards, a person must be over 18 years old and resident in the municipality.
