Incubator

Our six-month programme in Älmhult is all about nurturing your idea: shaping it, testing it, and getting it ready for the world. Throughout, you’ll be part of a supportive community rooted in the entrepreneurial spirit of Älmhult, Sweden – the heart of IKEA.

A place for ideas to take root

We’re passionate about spotting creative ideas and letting them grow, together. You don’t have to have it all figured out – sometimes, a rough sketch and a little curiosity are the perfect start.

We’re looking for ideas that can make life in and around people’s homes better and for people ready to join us on-site in Älmhult. If you’re grounded, globally minded, and ready to roll up your sleeves, we’d love to hear from you.

Hear it from the ones who took the leap

Every idea has a starting point. In this film, our incubator participants share what the programme has meant to them, and why they think more people should apply.

What we're looking for

At Home of the Home Lab, we care about brave ideas – future products and services – for life in and around our homes. We focus on sustainable and smart living, home as a sanctuary, afforable and timeless design, and life beyond the walls.

One day together, every week

We meet in Älmhult one day a week. It helps you get to know the place and the people here – and it often makes the ideas flow more easily. Small conversations happen, things move forward, and it becomes easier to take the next step together.

How the programme supports your idea

Twice a year, we welcome up to ten ideas to spend about six months with us in Älmhult. During that time, you’ll have the tools, support, and space to understand the challenge your idea tackles and why it matters.

You’ll get to explore your users and their needs, build your first prototype, and imagine what the next step could look like. You’ll try things out with real people, learn what works, refine it further, and get a feel for the financial basics and the measures that matter. Along the way, you’ll also practise presenting your idea and learn how to talk about it in a clear, confident way.

Questions and answers

Who is behind Home of the Home Lab?

Home of the Home Lab is a collaboration between Älmhult Municipality and IKEA Älmhult AB. The municipality provides programme management and the spaces we use, while IKEA contributes with knowledge and support. Around us, there’s also a wide network of partners and friends who share their experience when it’s needed.

Which supporters are involved in the programme?

Each participant is matched with people who have the right experience for their idea. This can be regional businesses, local entrepreneurs, or other partners in our network. The focus is always on what your idea needs, and who can help you move it forward.

How many participants will be accepted?

We welcome up to 10 ideas in the programme. Each idea can have up to two team members joining Home of the Home Lab. A small group means more time together, more personal support, and space to learn from one another.

Is there an opportunity to collaborate with other participants?

Absolutely. We believe ideas grow when people meet. Many participants end up helping each other, and some even start projects together during the programme.

What does the programme include?

During the programme, you’ll join workshops, talks, expert sessions, and get feedback from experts and fellow participants. We give you tools, knowledge, and access to a network that can help your idea take its next step.

What level of commitment is expected from me?

To make the most of the programme, you’ll need time and curiosity. All participants are expected to meet in Älmhult one day a week during office hours for group activities. There will also be digital sessions during office hours.

Outside of that, you’ll plan your own work. Most participants spend around 20 hours a week in total — a mix of programme activities and their own development time.

Can I combine the programme with work or studies?

Yes. Many participants balance other things in life. Just keep in mind that the programme takes about 20 hours a week, and the weekly sessions are mandatory.

How long does the programme run?

The autumn programme runs from 7 September, 2026, to 5 March, 2027.

What language is used?

We speak English together.

Does it cost anything to participate?

No, the programme is free. You’ll have access to our spaces, knowledge, networks, and support from experts. Costs that may come up for you as a participant are things like food, accommodation, travel to and from the activities in Älmhult, and any materials you might need – for a prototype or whatever helps you move your idea forward.

Tip! Previous participants have applied for different grants to help support their time in the programme.

Can I get help if I want to move to Älmhult?

If you’re curious about moving here, we’re happy to share tips through the municipality’s relocation service and connect you with local housing contacts. The programme doesn’t provide financial support for accommodation or moving.

I’m not a Swedish citizen – does that affect my ability to participate?

You’ll need to be in Älmhult one day a week. If a visa or residence permit is required, it’s your responsibility to arrange this before the programme begins.

How are candidates selected for interviews?

We review all applications carefully, looking at how they fit with our four idea directions, their originality, and whether the programme is the right place for them. Around fifteen candidates will be invited for on-site interviews between 11 and 29 May 2026.

What is the timeline going forward?

Applications are open between 30 March and 19 April. We carefully review applications as they come in. Shortlisted candidates have on-site interviews with us between 11 and 29 May. You’ll hear from us no later than 12 June.
