Canoe trail Helge River

Welcome to the canoe tour along the river Helge in southern Småland. Paddling along the Helge Å canoe trail is a great way to experience nature from a different perspective, taking you from river to lake. The landscape is varied and you will see open farming country side as well as dense forest and wetlands.

The canoe trail with its rest areas and service is open May 1 - September 31.

Navigate in the map above when planning your canoe adventure.

Paddling along the Helge Å canoe trail is a great way to experience nature from a different perspective, taking you from river to lake. Ideal starting points are Välje beach on Virestadsjön lake, Ryssby or Sjöstugans Camping in Älmhult. You can canoe both upstream and down, but the most common finishing point is Gustavsfors, as the river gets stony and faster beyond there. There are 12 canoe stops along the trail that provide water and firewood for canoeists who want to camp overnight. We only recommend these as suitable for overnight camping and they operate via canoe vouchers that can be purchased from the Älmhult and Ljungby tourist information offices and from the canoe rental companies.

Why not catch your own dinner? The canoe vouchers can be combined with a special fishing licence valid in all the waters from Virestad and Ryssby down to Gustavsfors. It is sold exclusively together with the canoe vouchers.

Get canoeing - in three steps!

  • Decide which part of the trail you want to canoe! Naturkartan application to your smartphone is a good tool for this. A physical map of the trail is also available from the tourist information offices, the canoe rental companies and most campsites.
  • Hire a canoe and buy canoe vouchers for your planned number of overnight stays. Don’t forget your canoe trail fishing licence if you want to fish for your supper.
  • Pack food and a tent and enjoy this wonderful outdoor experience. Camp at the designated canoe stops and leave the environment as you found it.

Always respect our nature and the locals - read about the rights of (and responsibilities for) public access here! Canoeists should also be aware that strong winds can suddenly appear on Lake Möckeln and caution needs to be taken for this during a windy day.

Don't forget to use a life jacket!
You may borrow life jackets for free in Älmhult tourist information! In Ljungby tourist center it is possible to rent life jackets aswell.
